Michigan is the 26th constituent state of the United States of America. The state’s capital is Lansing, and it is located in south-central Michigan. The origin of the state’s name is from an Ojibwa/Chippewa word “michingamma,” which means “large lake.” Michigan was admitted as one of the constituent states of the United States on January 26, 1837.
Michigan is a great and lucrative state as its economy focuses on the automotive industry, forestry, agriculture, and tourism due to the Great Lakes. In post office services, Michigan has divided into two stages: the upper peninsula and the lower peninsula. The Michigan postal code was and still is MI. due to its vast economic activities, there was a need for post offices for effective communication. The Marshall post office was one of Michigan’s earliest post offices.
The post office was designed by architect Howard Field and its construction funded by Works Progress Administration through the treasury. The completion of its construction was in 1932.
The Marshall post office was a simple rectangular building of red brick, Marshall sandstone, and copper roof in the Greek revival architectural style.
Currently, the Marshall post office is known as the Michigan postal service museum. It is the 2nd largest after the Smithsonian museum. It has numerous post office artifacts throughout the museum, such as old uniforms, mailboxes, railroad mail sacks, postal antiques such as cabinets, the wooden cigar boxes, and a mural of a rural mail carrier.
Other historic post offices in Michigan is the Nile’s post office built-in 1909 in the classical revival architectural style, Port Huron, Lincoln Park, among other historical ones.
